Before watching the music video "Sweeter" by Leon Bridges, I chose to do research Leon Bridges himself. Leon Bridges is an American Soul artist from Fort Worth, Texas known from is top songs "Coming home" and "Texas Sun". Leon Bridges is a singer, songwriter passionate about the African American community,anti-racism, and equality.
The first time I watched the music video, I instantly noticed the serious tone of the song. I understood the meaning had to do with inequality and fighting for a better life. The colors and facial expressions throughout enphasized the serious tones. Colors of black and white were a large symbol throughout the video representing inequality. Lyrics that stood out to me were "looking for a life more sweeter... instead I'm just a story repeating". Bridges sings about wanting a better life, wanting to change the future.
After watching the video a couple of times, I researched more into the meaning of the song and the music video. "Sweeter"was created by Leon Bridges shortly after the death of George Floyd. The song meant to me sung by a man breathing his last breath. The pain Leon Bridges felt after the incendent prompted him to write the song. Pain, tragety, hearbreak, being show throughout the lyrics of the songs and the symbols used in the video. Now understanding the greater meaning, I analyzed the video once more making the meaning, symbols, and themes portrayed in the music video stand out even greater.
