When reading the title of this mentor text,"What Happens When Deaf People Go To The Movies?", I realized I had no idea what deaf people did when they went to the movies, intrigued, I kept watching. The two people in the video started off by introducing themselves and also sharing that they were deaf. The goal of their youtube video was to show people how the experience of going to the movie theater actually works when you have impared hearing. People who are deaf have the ability to use a device called a captiview closed captioning device at the movie theater to understand what the movie is saying. Before continuing the video, I decided to research more on what exactly a captiview device did and what it looked like. Online, a captiview is defined as "a personal in-theater closed captioning system for hearing-impaired movie audiences that transmits and receives closed captions on a wireless frequency".
Continuing on with the video, the two people showed the process of what it takes to even achieve the device. As shown, it was already quite difficult because the people working at the theater were not familier with it. Next off, they showed the Captiview in the process of the movie. The captiview did not fit in the cupholder, it was too heavy to hold up, and it did not even match the audio to the movie leading for the people to leave the movie.
As I continued to watch the video, I noticed that one of the people in the video was able to speak but one was not. Although he was able to speak while being deaf, there were no voice overs and only closed captioning. I believe that the point of this was to show the audience how difficult it may be to follow along with subtitles, as they need to do when they use the Captiview device at the movie theater.
The point of this video was to bring awareness to the amount of difficulty it takes for a person with hearing-imparments to do basic things such as going to the movie theater.
Looking into the creater of this youtube video, Chella Man is known to be an actor, model, and LGBTQ activist. On his youtube channel, he shares his experience of being a transgender, deaf, and Jewish person of color. As the audience of his youtube video "What Happens When Deaf People Go To The Movies?" we got a taste of who Chella Man is and what he is passionate about.
